Accelerate – a bespoke course for local young people interested in careers in the built environment

This free course is for sixth form students from under-represented groups who are interested in exploring the skills and knowledge for a potential career in the built environment sector (architecture, engineering, planning, design etc).

This free programme includes ten creative workshops and work experience hosted by some of London’s top architecture practices and built environment practices. It is run by the charity Open City and hosted by three leading institutions: UCL's Bartlett School of Architecture, UAL's Central St Martins and Kingston University. The programme aims to increase diversity in the built environment profession and give students the confidence and skills needed to make strong university applications to study architecture and other related courses. The course starts in October 2023 and finishes in May 2024, and includes a public exhibition showcasing the students’ work in July 2024.

Over the last decade, hundreds of students have taken part in the programme, with 70% of Accelerate participants securing conditional offers to study architecture and related subjects at university.

Accelerate provides students with:

  • Skills development workshops in a university environment
  • Visits to iconic sites around London
  • Peer to peer learning with university students
  • Public exhibition
  • Guidance workshops on portfolio production and university applications
  • Mentoring with an architect at their London office.
  • Optional Arts Gold Award earning 16 UCAS points

The programme starts October 2023 and ends May 2024. If accepted onto the programme, students are committing to attend all 10 workshops (held on Saturdays). The Earls Court Development Company has partnered with Open City to enable at least 5 young people who live in the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham and 5 young people from the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea to join the next programme cohort.

The deadline for applications is Friday 15th September 2023, although early bird applications will be reviewed first, so we advise applying as soon as possible to guarantee a place on the course.
