We’re working in partnership with Young City Makers on a programme which introduces primary school students in Years 4, 5 and 6 to the built environment sector, and challenges them to consider the role they each play in shaping their city.
Following completion of Open City’s ‘Youth Engagement Training’, built environment professionals who are working on the Earls Court masterplan are partnered with a whole year group, and over the course of three sessions, support students to develop a vision for a future London.
In the first session, students are introduced to a range of 2D drawing techniques and ideation tools that promote design thinking. This is followed by a research site visit to explore a new part of the city, where students are led by their professional partners to see the city through their eyes. The final session is dedicated to the students bringing their ideas to life, while developing their collaborative and 3D-making skills, through the production of an A1-A0 class-wide model.
A shared celebration event at the end of the programme brings teachers, students and parents together to enjoy their achievements and exercise their public speaking skills.
